5 Stages of Committed Relationships

Have you ever thought: Why is our relationship so difficult? Things were perfect when we first met – what happened? Most likely, the answer is that you left the first stage of your relationship, and moved on to another. But can it be that easy?

Yes! Most people understand that relationships grow and change over time… There are specific, defined stages in long-term relationships, which offer new feelings, new challenges to overcome , and new opportunities for growth. And if you want your relationship to be one of mutual respect, love and intimacy, you will probably have to experience all the stages of the relationship at one point or another. Check out the description of each phase – does this sound familiar to anyone?

Before we begin, you should know that most people experience these stages in this order, and must solve the challenges of each stage before they can successfully move on to the next. Of course there are always exceptions to this rule. But for the most part, you can’t get out of experiencing all of these stages if you want a healthy and fulfilling relationship. Every couple goes through these stages at different speeds, and most people experience each stage more than once – often changing from one stage to another.*

Okay, now that I’ve given you the basic information, let’s dig a little deeper….

Stage 1 – The Romance Stage

This is also known as the Courtship Phase or Fantasy Phase, and can last anywhere from 2 months to 2 years. This is the time when you and your partner have just met, and everything is amazing. You can never be satisfied with each other. Neither of you can do anything wrong in the other’s eyes… mainly because you are still on your best behavior. The focus of this episode is on similarities – you have so many similar interests, you can be the same person! You show your partner your absolute best self, and you try to please each other as much as possible. Conflict is seen as “bad” at this stage, and is to be avoided at all costs. You can’t imagine living without this person, so you start spending as much time together as possible. This is the stage when our defenses are at their lowest, allowing you to open up and love. You and your partner are building an important foundation in this phase, so that your relationship can flourish. There are also biological effects. When you are in this stage, your body produces a lot of endorphins, which make you feel unusually happy, positive and excited about everything in your life (this is the feeling of “falling in love”!). This is the stage most often depicted in movies and romantic novels, for obvious reasons. Bottom line – you’re happier than ever, and you can’t imagine feeling any different.

Stage 2 – The Disillusion Stage

This stage is also known as the Familiarization Stage, or the Reality Adjustment Stage. This is where you start to realize that your partner is actually a person (horror of horrors!). You get to know each other better, and because of this you start to recognize their various faults and shortcomings. You see your partner in relaxed situations, and you are more relaxed too. Since your body can’t continue to produce the same level of endorphins that it was in the beginning, the feelings of being on top of the world begin to diminish. Your partner’s little habits aren’t as cute as they used to be, but there’s enough goodwill from the Romance Stage that you’re willing to forget them. This stage can begin to drain your relationship little by little, as you begin to see your partner for who he is. Or sometimes it happens suddenly, when there is some kind of dishonesty or deception. This phase can be confusing and discouraging, as you have just experienced the greater openness and connection of the Romance Stage. However, at this stage, your main job is to learn how to communicate and resolve conflict with this person effectively, which is an important skill if you want your relationship to continue.

Stage 3 – The Power Struggle Stage

This stage is also known as the Disappointment Phase or Distress Stage. As the behaviors from the Disillusionment Phase intensify, they become harder and harder to deal with. You are likely to start drifting away from each other at this stage. At this point, you both still believe that conflict is a “bad” thing, but you are more aware of your many differences. You will struggle to create boundaries in the relationship, and because of this even small annoyances become major issues. This is the stage where you define unacceptable behavior, and most couples have occasional or constant thoughts of leaving the relationship. More and more often, you start to feel that your partner is self-centered or uncaring, or worse, that they can’t be trusted. Deep resentment begins to build if you cannot resolve your issues in a respectful and amicable manner. Many couples get stuck in this stage, because this way of interacting becomes normal in their relationship. This is when it is absolutely necessary to learn to manage your differences effectively – to communicate and work together as a team, although it is tempting to believe that the sole purpose of your partner on Earth is making your life difficult. Not surprisingly, this is the stage for most couples when they decide to separate or file for divorce. However, if they can negotiate all the landmines in this stage, they will continue to….

Stage 4 – The Stability Stage

It is a restful and peaceful time, compared to the last period. This stage is also known as Friendship Stage or Reconciliation Stage. Some couples never reach this stage, but those who do find that they have a deeper sense of love, connection and trust with their partner. You now have a history together, and most people begin to trust the predictability of the relationship. As you enter this stage, you will realize that your partner is not perfect, but your personal differences are not as threatening as before. You will be able to resolve most of your conflicts, at least to some extent, and you will be more confident in the relationship. Some people feel lost at this stage as they learn to accept their partner for who they are, because it means they have to let go of the fantasy that was built earlier in the relationship. But for many, the deepening sense of friendship and commitment is a good trade-off for those early feelings of butterflies and excitement. This is also when you begin to re-establish your own interests and friendships outside, which the Romance Phase has left. There are some dangers that you may start to distance yourself from or be discreet with your partner in this phase, so you should try to maintain the connection created in the Romance Phase. Generally, this is the stage when you start to feel comfortable and happy in your deepening relationship.

Stage 5 – The Commitment Stage

This stage is also known as the Acceptance Stage, the Transformation Stage, or the True Love Stage. It is estimated that less than 5% of couples reach this stage, according to The Relationship Institute. This is the stage when both couples have a clear idea of who their partner is, flaws, shortcomings and weaknesses are many … because of things). You are no longer with your partner because you need them, but because you choose them, which means that the level of resentment you feel in the Power Struggle Phase is reduced, if not gone. If you’ve made it to this stage, you and your partner are a team. You love your partner, and you look out for their best interests as much as you look out for your own. Your partner is your best friend. There are some surprises about your partner’s habits or behavior in this phase. You worked together to overcome many challenges together, and grew to accept and support each other without restriction. Your vision for your relationship is aligned with who you are and what you both really want. You discuss your future together – you share the same goals in life, and you feel encouraged to define your relationship. Many couples decide to make a formal or public commitment to each other at this stage (such as marriage) to show their intention to continue their relationship. This is the stage where your relationship becomes a true partnership.
