5 Ways to Become a Better Footballer (Soccer Player)

Football (or soccer as the ‘non-Brits’ refer to it) is the most popular sport in the World. Millions of people play, at various levels, every day. Most people play for fun, some professionally, however the goal of the game is almost always the same – WIN! During the course of the article I will suggest ways to become a better player (and thus increase your and your teams chances of winning matches). All suggestions made will result in improvements to your game, although some will take longer than others to ‘evolve’. Here are:-

FITNESS: Watch the top players and you’ll notice they do a lot of movement in 90 minutes, often running 10-15km in the process. To do this, a high level of cardiovascular fitness is required. To gain such health requires dedication and discipline. Another sport where the participants have a very high level of fitness, perhaps more than the players, is boxing (perhaps not always the heavyweights!). Your water intake should be high – you should never feel thirsty as this is an early sign of dehydration. Replace the consumption of fizzy drinks, tea and coffee with water. Drink a minimum of 2 liters and a maximum of 5 liters (depending on body size and intensity of exercise(s) performed) per day. Carry water with you at all times, do not leave dehydration at any invitation to your body!

GOAL! Drink 2-5 liters of water per day, while avoiding alcoholic beverages, tea and coffee. Eat a portion(s) of green vegetables/salad or fruit at every meal. Snack every 2-4 hours on fruit/salad/vegetables or nuts. Remove junk food from your diet completely. TIP: Discipline and dedication are again key. You don’t become an extraordinary football player by doing ordinary things!

TEMPERAMENT AND FOCUS: Temperament and focus before, during and after a game is an important ingredient in making a player better. Before a match you should focus on what the overall goal is. That focus must remain strong and consistent throughout. This should not make you afraid or nervous, but ultimately guide you towards success. If you make a mistake or waste an opportunity, it doesn’t affect your focus because your goal is still the same. It’s unlikely that your overall goal is to score that particular chance or not make that mistake at the exact time. So, concentrate on what you can do in the remaining time, there will be plenty of time to review the performance after the game.

Finally, once the game ends focus on winning or losing with dignity. It will not only make you a better player, but a better person. GOAL!: Before a match spend 15-30 minutes focusing on what you want to achieve. Clarify your results. That’s why people often fail because they don’t know what they want to achieve.

DO SIMPLE THINGS AND BE GOOD: Not every player can do the things that Cristiano Ronaldo, Zindine Zidane or Lionel Messi can do.
