The Power of Saying Goodbye

A Natural End

Saying goodbye is not easy for most of us. It is full of fear and anxiety and worry about loss, about the future, about anything that is our basis for discomfort. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. There is a way to say goodbye and accept change gracefully – even welcome it.

Being able to say goodbye with ease and grace – to people – to projects – at any end gives a sense of peace, but also a sense of control – of our life and our destiny. In this last tactic, where we say goodbye, I will discuss endings and beginnings and finding peace in the inevitable.

I invite you to breathe deeply, center and come to this journey of farewell and the power that lies within.

Why do we have a hard time saying goodbye?

To end things? Have you ever thought that some things have a time to expire? That all things have a lifespan and there is nothing good or bad about that? Some relationships just end at some point. That doesn’t have to have judgment attached – it just can. Some businesses have a lifespan – though. Some projects have limitations. Some ideas we hold are better left behind. We all definitely have a lifespan. Why, then, is everything unnecessary? This is the natural way of things.

Some endings we can control and others seem to happen to us. As with many things, how we accept the ending is what makes the difference in how we perceive it. How they affect us. We can choose how we react and what we think. And, we can also feel whatever comes our way by not letting emotions rule our behavior or our decisions.

If you shut up and really take the time to be still and look and listen within, you know the answers. You know because the answers come bubbling up – seemingly out of nowhere. They come from your deep reserves, your inner knowing. You may not always like the answers, but chances are the answers are right. Just as you can’t always control the outcome of a situation, you can control how you respond to it.

Learning how to recognize what is in your power to change and what is not will give you great peace of mind. It involves knowing when something needs to end and knowing how to do so gracefully and with dignity and ease.

What You Accomplish Becomes You

The shape of things has changed. The shape doesn’t always look like you expect.

We always try to control and are very attached to the consequences. What they look like and what they need. If we are too attached to an idea of what ‘it’ should be like, we often miss the beauty and opportunity to see life differently. You may have the answer to your deepest desires, but if it doesn’t come in the package you envisioned, you may pass.

Whatever you do, whatever you are, love and embrace it now as it is. Tomorrow may change, be different or disappear. It is part of the process of life. We know this instinctively, but we don’t always pay attention. There is no eternity – in any of it. The better we accept that, the better we accept living fully in the now – which is, with everything, ALL that we have.

Conclusions

Think about an experience or a group you’ve been in – or a relationship that’s changed or lost. When you are at the peak of it, in the thick of it so to speak- you have no idea that it will end or change. When it is done, it can be your choice or someone else’s. Either way, it has ceased to exist in its former form. That’s what happens to all of us. This is the process of life. Look at that situation again and again. Do you think you would have done anything different if you knew it was going to end? Do you value or appreciate it more? Maybe.

Endings and transitions can be heartbreaking. Whatever you experience within that relationship or situation becomes a permanent part of you, your life experience. It makes you who you are. It continues, albeit in different forms. When you can let go easily and move on, you allow the natural steps of your life to play out. If you resist that change, you will not only live in the past – which in fact no longer exists, you will not be able to participate fully in the present and be part of the rich fabric of new experiences.

Let it Ebb and Flow

It’s a wonderful feeling when you accept the natural beginning and end and flow of experience and just let it be, without expectations. I know, you might be thinking: I AM NOT THE BUDDHA! I know – none of us, but we can choose a small part of this experience in each situation and then ‘stitch’ it to live a more and more fulfilling, peaceful and prosperous life defined by ease. and grace and knowledge.

Sometimes it is a simple start to clearly define what is in your power and what is not and it is easier to let go of what is not. You get nothing by holding on to that which you cannot control and you know it will not bring you happiness, or peace. If you let your truth speak, you can live in peace – a wild peace that burns in your heart and allows your truth to sing and touch you and guide you. You can do that. It’s yours to ask and to ask about paying attention, being mindful and making choices that serve you.

Giving up this way does NOT mean giving up on your desires, your goals or your plans. It just means that you change the experience, you see it differently; may change your path and what defines the experience for you – in your heart and in your mind.

Time to Close the Book

We can all learn something from the great Buddhist who said “you must close the book”. Like the book, things have a natural ending.

What if we entered life situations with the same awareness, the same acceptance? Then we also accept, the pain or the feeling of sadness or loss – it is part of the contract we made. If this seems too simple – this book comparison – what if you allow that? Is it too far-fetched to see how you let things pass slowly, without resistance? How would you feel? What sensations come to mind? What words? Anything you associate with freedom? With peace of mind?

Imagine yourself slowly closing the book as you finish the last chapter. We always feel a sense of loss at the end of a good book – the characters have become a part of our lives – we don’t want to let them go. However, we knew we had to and that was the deal we made. For hundreds of pages and hours, we become part of the world between the covers. Then, we must leave.

Say Goodbye with an Open Heart

If you can create a clean, clear and distinct ending, you will create closure that you feel good about and can accept. You say goodbye, but you do it with an open heart and a clear mind. Bottom line – you accept. You accept, you accept. Can you say it or feel like enough? The peace prayer comes to mind here:

God give me peace

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can do.

No wonder this is a relief to many people. It boils down to the essence of the message and gives us clear and simple instructions for the journey. Sometimes we have the most control over creating the life circumstances we most desire when we get off track. Surrendering and controlling the results is saying goodbye and loving the emotions that arise.

We are wired for beginnings and endings and the more we learn to love and accept them the less conflict we experience. With that gentle reader, I will say goodbye for a moment, knowing that our journey has begun. I wish you peace, happiness, joy and really juicy, exciting adventures on your way
