The Pros and Cons of Having a Ferret For a Pet
My ferrets “dook,” do the war dance, and “skitter” between my legs, and smile at my husband, kids, and me. For my family, ferrets make excellent pets. My husband thinks they are better than dogs, and we all prefer ferrets to cats. Ferrets are very different from cats and dogs, however. Their behavior, smell, motivation, and shape are different from cats and dogs. They are classified as exotic pets, and it is important that you consider the pros and cons of ferret parenthood before adopting one of these rare weasels.
The differences between ferrets and other pets make the advantages and disadvantages of owning a pet ferret
Knowledge: I hesitate to say that cats and dogs are smarter than ferrets, but I quickly recognize that ferrets have a very different kind of intelligence. Ferrets are excellent problem solvers. As an example, for Christmas one year, I put an apple in a stocking for my ferret. (The ferret likes to steal apples and keep them. He never eats them.) The apple is as small in diameter as a stocking. Ernie stuck his head in the sock, took out the apple, and pulled it out. It didn’t work. After only two attempts he crawled out of the sock and onto it. He pushed the apple.
Strength: Every ferret I have ever seen is stronger than the most dedicated cat or dog. Ferrets are extremely curious. They need to know what is behind closed doors. They need to know what is behind an obstacle. They have to study the back of a dishwasher and the inside of a sofa. If a ferret somehow manages to get your pots and pans in the cabinet, don’t be surprised to find them later with your silverware. This strength makes it difficult to “ferret proof” and make your home safe for your beloved pets.
Thief: Dogs tend to steal shoes and socks as puppies, but they are more in nature. Ferrets “steal” all their lives. If an object attracts a ferret, it will grab the object and hide it in its hiding place. Ferrets don’t grow out of it – people learn to put away their keys and shoes.
Food (Input): While dogs are omnivores, ferrets are like cats. They are carnivores. In fact, ferrets are obligate carnivores and they eat meat and fat. Ferrets need ferret food, and ferret food is more expensive than cat food.
Output: Ferrets do not bury their waste in the litter box. Dogs are easily trained to go outside. Ferrets, on the other hand, usually do their business in corners. While they can be trained to use litter boxes, it is rare to find a ferret walking into another room to use a litter box.
Name: Cats and dogs learn their names quickly and dogs are quickly trained to come up with their names. Few ferrets know their names. Only two of my ferrets know their names. A woman I know who has operated a ferret shelter for 18 years told me she has only ever seen one ferret show knowledge of her name.
Which of these is pro and which is against? Well, the answer to that question is different for each person.
Before you get a ferret for a pet, ask yourself the following questions.
- When your pet ferret steals your keys, is it cute? If your pet ferret steals your keys twenty times, is it still cute?
- Are you ready to remodel your home to prove it?
- Are you ready to deal with magnetic locks on your cabinets?
- Are you ready to get rid of your chairs?
- Do you feel out of shape when the bottom of your doors have scratch marks?
- Have you thought about cleaning the litter boxes?
- Have you considered cleaning places other than the litter box?
- Can you break through the two-foot-tall Plexiglas barrier?
- Got a sensitive nose?
- If you leave a glass, can you imagine if it is tilted and has a nose on it?
It’s not all bad. Ask yourself these questions too.
- Do you like watching animals?
- Do you like to play with your animals?
- Do you like pets to play with you and play with themselves?
- Do you like cute animals?
Ferrets are not for everyone, but they are wonderful for some people
Ferrets can seem messy at times, but once you know the species, they’re not.
Are you still thinking about a pet ferret?
Please visit a ferret shelter near you and talk to the shelter workers. Besides the fact that almost all ferret shelters are overflowing now, the shelter people can help you understand a particular ferret’s personality. Shelter people also have an interest in doing what it takes to make your home a permanent ferret home. The American Ferret Association and Ferret Life both have directories for ferret shelters.
